Name : Mick LaSalle / Alias : San Francisco Chronicle
This is an 83-minute movie that feels a half hour longer and, if it weren't for the loud crescendos, it would put people to sleep.

Name : Kevin C. Johnson / Alias : St. Louis Post-Dispatch
"The Lazarus Effect" boasts nothing special. It's not going to provide much relief for horror-starved audiences.

Name : Colin Covert / Alias : Minneapolis Star Tribune
The film intends to explore the nature and mystery of death, but devolves into a combination of trivial science fiction and banal "Pet Sematary" havoc.

Name : Claudia Puig / Alias : USA Today
Absorbing, well-crafted and appropriately tense, with a smart cast that raises it a notch above average.

Name : Ben Kenigsberg / Alias : New York Times
[A] risible mix of pseudoscientific hokum and supernatural freakouts.

Name : Bilge Ebiri / Alias : New York Magazine/Vulture
A grimy, dopey, confused thriller that wastes a very likable cast.

Name : Michael O'Sullivan / Alias : Washington Post
It staggers, zombielike, from one jump-scare to another before petering out, a scant 83 minutes after rising from the slab.

Name : Joe Neumaier / Alias : New York Daily News
Doesn't go far enough, isn't scary enough and has mad scientists who just aren't mad enough.

Name : James Rocchi / Alias : TheWrap
The Lazarus Effect doesn't exactly break new ground, but it nonetheless finds plenty to relish in the mouldering bits it stitches together as it gives classic themes about death, life and the soul a literal and figurative shot in the arm.

Name : Brad Wheeler / Alias : Globe and Mail
No resurrection for this dog please.

Name : Tirdad Derakhshani / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
Mildly enjoyable despite its basic mediocrity .

Name : Keith Staskiewicz / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
I would have loved to see more from the filmmakers, daring to fail while staking out some new terror incognita instead of just going through the motions of an experiment for which we already have the results.

Name : Frank Scheck / Alias : Hollywood Reporter
The film squanders whatever potential it had, not to mention the talents of such performers as Duplass and Wilde who clearly deserve better.

Name : Rafer Guzman / Alias : Newsday
Another cheapie from the producers of "Paranormal Activity." Aims low, but hits its target.

Name : Simon Abrams / Alias : Village Voice
Death may not be the end in The Lazarus Effect, but it should be.

Name : Peter Keough / Alias : Boston Globe
There are lessons to be learned from this minimalist thriller. The first is that scaring people requires more than just tossing furniture around, turning the lights off and on, and basically sneaking up from behind and shouting "Boo!"

Name : Richard Roeper / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
"The Lazarus Effect" is nothing but a cheap horror film cloaked in scientific mumbo-jumbo.

Name : Ben Sachs / Alias : Chicago Reader
It's thematically thin but competently made and good for a few scares.

Name : Soren Anderson / Alias : Seattle Times
You've seen it all before. The only question is: Why haven't they?

Name : James Berardinelli / Alias : ReelViews
The Lazarus Effect begins with an intriguing premise then proceeds to squander all the early goodwill through a slow, inexorable descent into cheap horror gimmicks.

Name : A.A. Dowd / Alias : AV Club
Like too many horror films, this one seems targeted at a hypothetical audience using only 10 percent of its brainpower.

Name : Lou Lumenick / Alias : New York Post
Looks like it was directed by a blind and deaf person over a weekend on a leftover laboratory set from a TV show and edited with a roulette wheel.

Name : Gary Goldstein / Alias : Los Angeles Times
A tense, efficient medical thriller best enjoyed sans microscope.

Name : Geoff Berkshire / Alias : Variety
Mark Duplass and Olivia Wilde struggle to breathe life into a recycled thriller about the horrors of reanimation.

Name : Bruce Demara / Alias : Toronto Star
While The Lazarus Effect isn't the worst scary movie film you'll see this year, it is probably one of the most predictable and lazily plotted.

Name : V.A. Musetto / Alias : New York Post
It is Dequenne who holds the film together - she and Techine's youthful touch, which belies his 66 years.

Name : David Fear / Alias : Time Out
Techine offers a character study in lieu of context for the similar 2007 hoax that threw the French press into a tizzy, and like many of his best films, this what-if examination works best as an actors' showcase.

Name : Bernard Besserglik / Alias : Hollywood Reporter
The movie is held together.by the fluidity of his style and his characteristic blend of lightness and gravity.

Name : Ronnie Scheib / Alias : Variety
Techine fashions a brilliantly complex, intimate multi-strander, held together but somewhat skewed by the central perf of Emilie Dequenne.

Name : Manohla Dargis / Alias : New York Times
A seductive drama.

Name : Ella Taylor / Alias : Village Voice
For better or worse, there isn't a human experience that French director Andre Techine can resist lathering into a tone poem.

Name : Joe Williams / Alias : St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Although this stylish and ominously paced vehicle starts with a full itinerary, it never makes a vital connection.

Name : Rex Reed / Alias : New York Observer
The film is based on a play, but it is to the director's credit that it never shows the claustrophobic trappings of a proscenium stage.

Name : Martin Tsai / Alias : Los Angeles Times
A paper-thin plot ornamented with distractions: a nonlinear narrative, unreliable narrators, flatulent dialogue and awkward post-production work.

Name : Wesley Morris / Alias : Boston Globe
A movie whose blitheness doesn't know when to quit.

Name : Roger Ebert / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
The movie seems likely to be about anti-Semitism, but that's more the occasion than the subject.

Name : Michael O'Sullivan / Alias : Washington Post
It's a well-acted, but frustratingly inconclusive exercise.

Name : Andrea Gronvall / Alias : Chicago Reader
Techine glosses over the story's most potent issue: France's complicated relationship with its Jewish community.

Name : Owen Gleiberman / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
Techine has made a half-captivating, half-baffling tease of a movie in which one woman's destructive whim has the effect of making anti-Semitism look like a myth.

Name : Mick LaSalle / Alias : San Francisco Chronicle
This is Techine's gift - not just detail, but telling detail; and not just slices of life, but slices as rich as a cassata cake.

Name : Scott Tobias / Alias : AV Club
Given several years' distance from the media blitz, Techine brings clarity, maturity, and perspective to the case while still subtly addressing all the thorny social issues the affair touched off.

Name : Rene Rodriguez / Alias : Miami Herald
Like Techine's best films, the movie appears to be a story about nothing - until it suddenly becomes a meditation on the vagaries of the human heart.

Name : Steven Rea / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
The Girl on the Train reverberates with a quiet, seductive power.

Name : David Jenkins / Alias : Time Out
The film's big strength is its unwillingness to dish out easy answers

Name : Anthony Lane / Alias : New Yorker
At the age of sixty-six, [Techine] approaches the exploits of his characters with a gusto, and a willingness to be led astray, that borders on the adolescent.

Name : James Berardinelli / Alias : ReelViews
Although the main character's motivations remain largely a matter of conjecture, The Girl on the Train is a compelling piece of cinema.

Name : Kenneth Turan / Alias : Los Angeles Times
Don't expect any kind of neo-documentary examination of cause and effect. That's not filmmaker Andre Techine's style, and this is one of his most successful films.
